Pickups, based on the old Jansen/D'armond types, very high output, but vintage sound. Pickup 3 x Entwistle JE-SC
Controls Volume, Tone Entwistle smooth trak , ATN 5 (5 way varitone) and Bass Cut switch.
Jansen floating Trem with roller bridge. Whammy bar not shown
avoid using the ATN 5 and the Bass cut together, it's a bit too thin!
Also the three mini switches are the individual pickup switches, the 5 way rotary is the ATN 5 (varitone) and the slide switch next to it is a Mute
1) This is the fully clockwise position, and it is a bypass.. in other words, nothing goes through the ATN 5's system.
2) This position passes more midrange information from the pickups, and is slightly nasal in character.
3) This position has a more acoustic response, and on this position. If you back the volume off a little and give your amp plenty of treble, cut back the middle, and bass at 2 o'clock then you should get an almost acoustic electric sound.
4) This position is similar to position 3 just a slight difference in tonality.
5) This position tends to render a thinner sound, it is still a little acoustic, but if you take the volume back a little, you can end up with that kind of bright surf guitar sound.structure..
THE ATN-5
The idea behind the ATN circuitry which is fitted to the Jazzman was to basically add modern day versatility to what is essentially a retro styled instrument.
We understand that the demands of the modern day musician are greater now than ever before, with such a huge crossover of musical genres needing to be covered tonally. Whether you’re in a covers bands looking to authenticate sounds from the 60’s/70s/80’s etc or a studio tech looking for the perfect tone to accompany modern electronic synthesis, versatility is paramount.
For the live musician that has to carry 4 or 5 guitars to cover a given live set, we wanted to try to help them reduce their armoury somewhat by developing a workhorse that could cover most musical genres…a little like having a shampoo and a conditioner all in one.
Above we’ve listed the settings of the ATN-5 where we feel that the switching best suits the musical genre but we must be crystal clear with this in that the tones that we’re hearing through a flat lined Jet City JCA-20 HV valve amp may be very different to those of you coming through a Marshall JTM-30 or a Vox AC-30 or indeed through the monitors of a HP laptop. There will always be a period of trial and error to find the tone that best suits your individual amp/effects unit set up so please bear this in mind.
There are certain hidden settings you can achieve by simply rolling back the volume and tone controls or both. We’re certain that there’ll be something in there to suit all genres and setups.
Just finished the 1950's De'Armond pickup samples for the Jansen Jazzman 6, they look great, very authentic and sound 100% (really quite powerful), i am using two Alnico 5 magnets underneath the pickup to get a more saturated sound
